May 25-26, 2013: Words in 3D
Attended the conference that joined writers, editors and publishers, and went to a session on publicity by Rachel Sentes. She loved the costume and idea, and gave an impromptu shout-out at the start of her talk! This led to me meeting Jason Halbauer, who works at Breakfast TV. Amazing how things snowball in the most unlikely ways.
May 20, 2013: Monster Mini Golf
An enthusiastic response from staff, but unfortunately the plastic layer on the suit prevented the fluorescent black-light effect I’d been hoping for.
May 15, 2013: Astro-YOGA near CityTV
At 6:00 AM, I went and did yoga outside the CityTV studio where they film Breakfast TV Edmonton. It landed me on their show (check out the media section for more). They had a really good sense of humour and I’m grateful they were game to do something with an astronaut.
May 11, 2013: Young Scientist Conference
I gave a demo and on lasers, light and lenses at the Young Scientist Conference on the University of Alberta campus. It was great to see so many enthusiastic young minds, and the event offers great variety for a spectrum of interests.
May 4, 2013: May the Fourth be back to the future!
April 27-28, 2013: Calgary Expo (Comic Con)!
April 23, 2013: Muttart Conservatory & the Corpse Flower
The only event so far which has been appropriate for my suit: snowboarding. It was a blast and I received a hugely warm welcome by so many skiers.
With the help of Glen LaValley, Debbie Ha, Tyler Collins, Linh Hoangh and Thanh Nguyen, we made (heavily guided by Glen’s genius) a giant balloon alien costume and proceeded to film an epic B movie at the University of Alberta. Stay tuned! It was SO. MUCH. FUN.
I danced up a storm at a Zumba by Brittany class from 6-7 PM. It was exhausting and I felt like I was going to die, but I got some really hilarious footage. Thanks to everyone who was willing to rock out on camera! It was a memorable (and stinky!) night. More details about Zumba can be found on Brittany’s Facebook page!
March 29, 2013: Stroll down Whyte Ave with the Sun
I met with Perry, a photographer from the Edmonton Sun, for a photo shoot and stroll down Whyte Avenue. I need to try and find a way to better cool my suit, but overall I got a lot of smiles and a very positive response. There were some requests for me to bring back agricultural samples should I discover them while in space, and I had to make assurances that I would render such samples available upon my return.
March 24, 2013: Dance Dance Revolution at West Edmonton Mall
I walked through a public place for the first time with my suit, and the response was overwhelmingly positive. When I went to Cineplex to do some DDR in my suit, the arcade manager gave me a $10 gift certificate! The suit was boiling-lava hot though. Now I understand the need for heat sinks in space suits.
